He won’t share this willingly, but Matt Mellott has a coffee routine that puts Starbucks to shame. Hand-roasted beans and a thrice-daily habit keep him in perpetual motion at the office.
This might not sync with those who know Matt’s background as a tactical pilot in the Marine Corps and a no-frills commercial real estate (CRE) guy. But after 12 years of military service, including deployments with only MRE coffee available, he takes a good brew seriously.
The common thread is a relentlessly high standard of quality – both in his work and his coffee. It’s a standard that drives the success of Sterling Commercial Real Estate Advisors.
After supporting the CRE function at a local real estate company for a few years, Matt saw the opportunity to start a brokerage specializing in commercial real estate across Montana. And so, in August 2017, Sterling CRE Advisors came into being.
“It was either flying fighter jets or doing commercial real estate. Those are the only things I’m good at.”
At first, Sterling CRE was just Matt and a single employee. In the span of a few years, the company produced hundreds of transactions and grew to a staff of over 10. Working with the same intensity that he had flying F/A-18s, Matt earned CCIM and SIOR endorsements while Sterling CRE expanded listings across Montana.
His background in property analysis, lease structuring, and multi-family investments secured Sterling’s position as an expert in the local market. Matt’s national CRE experience in large metros taught him the irreplaceable value of data-driven decision-making.
Matt serves the community as a Montana Ambassador and board member of the Missoula Downtown Association. He graduated from Leadership Montana in 2019.
Once his laptop closes, Matt’s energy is devoted to his six children and wife, Danielle.
What does someone who has seen (a lot of) the world wish he could bring to Montana? “Alejandro’s Tacos! Montana has great food- we just need an Alejandro’s.”
